Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Relief of headache including migraine, neuralgia; toothache, muscular aches, minor arthritic pain, backache, minor aches & pains associated w/ common cold & menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). Reduction of fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Medicol Advance cap Adult & childn ≥12 yr softgel cap every 4-6 hr. Max: 6 softgel cap/24 hr. Max duration of treatment: 10 days. Medicol Advance 400 cap Adult & childn ≥12 yr 1 softgel cap tid as needed. Leave at least 4 hr between each dose. Alternatively, 1 softgel cap every 8 hr as needed. Max: 3 softgel cap/24 hr. Max duration of treatment: 10 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: May be taken w/ food/milk if GI upset occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Bronchospasm, angioedema, nasal polyps or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Concomitant therapy of aspirin or other NSAIDs, lithium or methotrexate. Stomach ulcers, bleeding or other stomach problems. History of stroke, heart attack, uncontrolled high BP or CHF. Before or after heart surgery. Kidney or liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Risk of allergic reactions & severe stomach bleeding. Alcohol (may result in stomach bleeding). Do not take >3 softgel cap/24-hr period nor continuously for >10 days.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, drowsiness, malaise, lightheadedness, nervousness, headache, fatigue, mood swings, paresthesia, hallucinations & dream abnormalities; stomach ulceration &/or bleeding, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, mouth ulcers, flatulence, bloating & abdominal pain; blood in the urine, kidney damage/failure; abnormal liver function tests, jaundice, inflammation of the liver, liver failure; anemia & low WBC count; fluid retention, increased BP, low BP, CVA, palpitations; tinnitus, decreased hearing, amblyopia, conjunctivitis, optic neuritis, diplopia & cataracts; rashes.
Drug Interactions
Decreased blood conc w/ aspirin. Increased risk of stomach & intestinal bleeding w/ phenylbutazone, indomethacin, salicylates & other NSAIDs (eg, mefenamic acid, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen); anticoagulants (eg, warfarin, dicumarol) or thrombolytics (eg, streptokinase); corticosteroids (eg, prednisone, prednisolone), SSRIs (eg, citalopram, escitalopram, sertraline); ginkgo biloba. Acute reduction in kidney function & BP response to ACE inhibitors (eg, captopril, enalapril, ramipril, imidapril, fosinopril, lisinopril). May reduce the effect of mifepristone (do not use 8-12 days after mifepristone); diuretics (eg, furosemide & thiazide). Risk of methotrexate & lithium toxicity. Increased plasma conc of cardiac glycosides (eg, digitalis). May enhance the effect of phenytoin. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ ciclosporin or tacrolimus. Medicol Advance 400: Increased risk of bleeding into a joint w/ antivirals eg, zidovudine. Increased risk of convulsions w/ quinolones eg, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin.
